Brazil’s Next Deforestation Frontiers

چکیده
Public land grabbing, concomitant with hinterland colonization and agrarian reform programs, translocated millions of rural migrants into remote regions Brazil, most recently to the Amazonian forest domain. Despite state-of-the-art command-and-control sensing monitoring systems in effective law enforcement a country ∼8.5 million km 2 remains huge challenge, particularly difficult times lenient central-government environmental policies. Cropland pasture expansion is important factor use change leading driver primary habitat conversion worldwide. This essay discusses likely business-as-usual agricultural frontiers Northern Central Brazil make room for new farmland: MaToPiBa region transitional Cerrado-Caatinga biogeographic zone; northernmost Cerrado areas Amapá; opening-up Indigenous Lands industrial scale agriculture. We discuss origins, recent developments implications conservation these frontiers.

The Next Frontiers
This issue of the IJTMB includes articles that represent the scope of therapeutic massage and bodywork (TMB) practice and education. The two research articles represent the testing of deductive hypotheses not commonly seen in the TMB literature: the change in tactile abnormalities of young children with autism using qigong massage, and changes in postural balance from massage to the muscles ass...
متن کاملProximate Population Factors and Deforestation in Tropical Agricultural Frontiers.
Forest conversion for agriculture expansion is the most salient signature of human occupation of the earth's land surface. Although population growth and deforestation are significantly associated at the global and regional scales, evidence for population links to deforestation at micro-scales-where people are actually clearing0020forests-is scant. Much of the planet's forest elimination is pro...
متن کاملNext frontiers in CAR T-cell therapy
Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is entering a new era, transitioning from an experimental approach being tested in a handful of centers to a more mainstream and broadly investigated therapeutic platform with significant efforts directed towards commercial translation. CARs are synthetic receptors engineered and transduced into T cells to redirect T-cell cytotoxicity by recognitio...
متن کاملModels of Social Influence: Towards the Next Frontiers
In 1997, Robert Axelrod wondered in a highly influential paper “If people tend to become more alike in their beliefs, attitudes, and behavior when they interact, why do not all such di erences eventually disappear?” Axelrod’s question highlighted an ongoing quest for formal theoretical answers joined by researchers from a wide range of disciplines. Numerous models have been developed to underst...
متن کاملMicroRNA history: discovery, recent applications, and next frontiers.
Since 1993, when the first small non-coding RNA was identified, our knowledge about microRNAs has grown exponentially. In this review, we focus on the main progress in this field and discuss the most important findings under a historical perspective. In addition, we examine microRNAs as markers of disease diagnosis and prognosis, and as new therapeutic targets.
